Saratoga Pony Club (SPC) is a local affiliate of the United States Pony Club, a national youth-oriented organization that develops riding and horse care skills in an environment centered on teamwork, self-sufficiency (i.e., not having the parents do the work!), and fun.
In recent times, SPC has been meeting twice a month, on the second and fourth weekends of the month, usually around 2 or 2:30pm. One of the meetings is unmounted, where we teach horse care topics (e.g. nutrition, health care, safety around horses, horse sports, etc.). The unmounted meeting takes place at Garrod Farms in Saratoga. The other meeting is a mounted lesson, held at Webb Ranch in Portola Valley. Most of our members don't have horses of their own, so the mounted lessons use Webb Ranch lesson horses.
In addition to club meetings, we also take part in regional activities such as Quiz (an unmounted horse knowledge competition), Rallies (horse shows where the members compete as teams), and there is usually a regional summer camp over a weekend in June or July.
Our Core Values:
- Horsemanship with respect to healthcare, nutrition, stable management, handling and riding a mount safely, correctly and with confidence
- Organized teamwork including cooperation, communication, responsibility, leadership, mentoring, teaching and fostering a supportive environment
- Respect for the horse, self and others when riding on Garrod property and in Garrod arenas. Respect for land through land conservation; and respect for horse management and learning
- Volunteer for parents, and others to support the Pony Club program locally, regionally and nationally through helping the club continue and develop young riders
- Education at an individual pace to achieve personal goals and expand knowledge through teaching others
